Membra fondatoare a Star Alliance, United Airlines este o companie aeriana americana si una dintre cele mai mari din lume. Hub-ul este Aeroportul International Chicago O'Hare. Alte noduri importante ale companiei sunt la: Denver, San Francisco, Los Angeles si Washington Dulles.
Zboara spre peste 1000 de destinatii din 170 de tari, deservind, printre multe altele, orase din America de Nord, Europa, Asia, America Latina, Caraibe si Orientul Mijlociu. In fiecare zi, opereaza in jur de 3000 de zboruri in toata lumea.
United Airlines sustine ca este cea mai veche companie aeriana comerciala din Statele Unite, la inceput numindu-se Varney Airlines. Primele zboruri au fost unele de posta intre Boise, Idaho si Pasco, Washington si au fost efectuate in anul 1926. In 1927, Willian Boeing si-a deschis propria companie, cumparand, printre altele, si Varney Airlines. In 1929, numele a fost schimbat in United Aircraft and Transport Corp.
In timpul atacurilor teroriste de la 11 Septembrie 2001, doua avioane United Airlines au fost ocupate de teroristi. Unul dintre ele a intrat in Turnul de Sud al World Trade Center din New York, iar al doilea, faimosul Flight 93, a cazut intr-o zona rurala din Pennsylvania, doar pentru ca pasagerii au ales sa se lupte cu teroristii.
In prezent, United Airlines utilizeaza 703 de aeronave cu o varsta medie a flotei de 13 de ani. Compania intentioneaza sa echipeze toate aeronavele cu WiFi pâna in 2015. United opereaza cu urmatoarele aeronave: 55 Airbus A319-100, 97 Airbus A320-200, 24 Boeing 747-400, 134 Boeing 757-200, 19 avioane Boeing 777-200, 33 avioane Boeing 777-200ER si 58 avioane Boeing 767-300E.
